New Jersey Bar Exam at a Glance


The New Jersey Bar Exam is a three-day exam consisting of the following:

Day 1: Multistate Bar Exam (50% of score)

  • Mornings: 100 questions
  • Afternoons: 100 questions

Day 2: 7 Essays (50% of score)


Testable topics on the Essays include
: The essay questions are based upon the subjects of contracts, criminal law, real property, torts, constitutional law, evidence, and civil procedure. An essay question may cut across two or more basic subject areas. In addition, these questions may be framed in the context of fact situations involving, and interrelated with, the following subjects: agency; conflict of laws; corporations; equity; family law; partnership; Uniform Commercial Code Articles 2 (Sales), 3 (commercial paper), and 9 (secured transactions); wills, trusts, and estates; zoning and planning; and disciplinary rules.

  • Passing score: 136
  • Bar Exam dates: February 24 - 25, 2010; July 28 - 29, 2010
  • MBE Transfer Policy: MBE scores are only transferable when you sit for New Jersey and another state contemporaneously. For information on transferring your MBE score, please visit the National Conference of Bar Examiners.
  • No admission by reciprocity.
  • MPRE scores are transferable. You must arrange to have your scores transferred to New Jersey. A score of 75 has been set by the Board as the qualifying level on the exam. Note that if you have taken a qualifying Professional Responsibility Ethics Class in law school and have passed with a grade of a "C" or better, you may submit evidence in your Law School Certificate of successful completion of a professional ethics course and forgo the MPRE.
  • Bring an official photo ID for admission.
  • Students generally study 8-10 hours per day for the Bar Exam outside of class.
  • The Board of Bar Examiners seeks to release the grades from the February Bar Exam by May 15th. For the July Bar Exam, the Board seeks to release the grades by November 15th. Results will be posted by Candidate Identification Number after they are mailed. A list of successful candidates will be posted on the Board's website 72 hours after results are mailed.
