DC-Baltimore Tutors

Meet Our Tutors

Kaplan Premier's tutors are the foundation of our service. Having graduated our rigorous training and development program, they all share the same level of excellence: near-perfect scores (in the 95th percentile or above), previous instructional experience, and—most importantly—the ability to create an interactive one-on-one learning environment based on the individual needs of each student.

Here are just a few of the tutors who work with Kaplan Premier students in the D.C./Baltimore area. At the onset of any tutoring program, your Academic Coordinator will conduct our Tutor Matching Interview to find the best possible tutor for your child.

Jenna

Subjects Tutored: SAT (all sections), ACT (math and science), SAT Subject Tests in Math (levels 1 and 2)
Teaching/Tutoring Experience: Before coming to Kaplan, I did mostly volunteer teaching of younger students and I worked in the peer tutoring center in our math department at Sarah Lawrence College. I have been teaching and tutoring for Kaplan since the summer of 2005.
Degrees Earned: B.A. in Liberal Arts from Sarah Lawrence College. I focused in Math, Theatre, Dance, and Vocal Music.
Fun Fact: I sang solos in a series of concerts in Tuscany when I was part of the Siena Summer Session for Music and the Arts
Hobbies/Passions: Singing, dancing, acting — anything that will get me on stage. I'm an aspiring professional actress/singer. I also really love anime, Dance Dance Revolution, Harry Potter, and Terry Pratchett's Disk Word series.
Favorite KP Experience: I was once called in to work with a student last minute because his regular tutor was suddenly transfered to a different state by her regular job. I completed the final two math lessons with him, and when he decided the next fall to study for the Math level 2 subject tests, he specifically requested me. They were a wonderful family and even helped me when I discovered a flat tire after one of our tutoring sessions. After lots of hard work, he ended up scoring an 800 on his Math Subject Test.

Melissa

Subjects Tutored: SAT, ACT, ISEE, SSAT
Teaching/Tutoring Experience: I have been teaching in the Kaplan classroom for nearly four years. I have been a KP tutor for almost as long and I am an ACE Trainer for Kaplan as well.
Degrees Earned: B.S. in sociology, with a minor in systems engineering from West Point Masters of Science in Administration from Central Michigan University MBA from Kaplan University (to be completed in the spring of 2008)
Fun Fact: I was a Captain in the Army!
Hobbies/Passions: Reading, running, cross stitching, spending time with my husband and kids
My Favorite Kaplan Premier Experience: My most memorable experience was a student who was doing very well in tutoring but just didn't have the confidence that what we had practiced would carry over to Test Day. I kept telling her, "You have to trust me!" Still her doubts lingered. On our last tutoring session together I asked her to stand up, close her eyes and fall backwards. (You know the drill...its a team building thing.) She did and, betteryet, I caught her. She said, "Alright! I will trust you!" She called me five weeks later to let me know that her scores were better than she had even hoped for.

Chris

Subjects Tutored: SAT (all sections), SAT Subject Tests in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math IC, Math IIC
Teaching/Tutoring Experience: Roughly 2 years of tutoring experience for prior to joining Kaplan Premier in 2006.
Degrees Earned: Senior at Georgetown University, set to graduate with a B.A. in Psychology in 2008.
Fun Fact: In my high school years, I went snowboarding on a regular basis, and eventually got sponsored (partially) by Burton Snowboard Co. to race in boardercross events at Stratton Mountain in Vermont. This explains my inordinately large collection of (retrospectively) hideous winter jackets.
Hobbies/Passions: Snowboarding, running, tennis, movies, concerts, driving ambulances (part of on-campus EMS service).
Favorite KP Experience: I would say that my most fulfilling moments are when I really connect with a student who has thus far been unmotivated or disinterested. I know that every student out there has the ability to learn; however, a good teacher not only draws out that latent talent, but more importantly, cultivates that will to excel that drives the learning experience.
