Applying for Scholarships

O.K... we know you're thinking, "What's so hard about applying for a scholarship? I just follow the directions, right?"

Right. And that's what's so hard about it.

You'd be amazed at how many scholarship applications get tossed aside every year because applicants failed to follow simple directions. You will be swamped with applications. You will be pressed for time. However, make sure you follow the application procedures to the letter.

A Few Things to Look For

Writing the Request Letter

If you're writing a letter to an organization to request an application, proofread it and make sure that it follows standard business letter format. Keep it simple. Request an application for the specific program, let them know how you found out about it, and ask for information on any additional programs they may offer.

Track It

Track the responses you receive and note any deadlines involved. If you haven't received a response within 6 weeks, write a follow-up letter or call to inquire about your request.

The Application

Once you receive an application, photocopy it. Fill out the copy first to avoid any permanent mistakes. Then transfer the information onto the original form. Make sure every question is answered. Be neat. And if supplemental information — such as recommendation letters—is needed, present it an organized and easy to understand format.

The Thank You Note

If you're lucky enough to receive an award, make sure that you send a thank you letter. If your handwriting is legible, a handwritten note always adds a nice personal touch. If not, typewritten will do just fine.
