Strategy Used: Know the grading criteria
The Essay section of the SAT is scored from 1-6. When working
on your Essay it pays to know the criteria for a good score:
An essay that scores a 6 has:
- A clearly stated position
- Detailed, relevant support
- Solid organization
- Engaging standard English
- Usually 300 words or more
An essay that scores a 5 has:
- A clearly stated position
- Relevant support
- General organization
- Standard English
- Usually 250 words or more
A score of 4 has:
- A clearly stated position
- Relevant support
- Some organization
- Standard English
- Usually 200 words or more
