Strategy Used: Know the grading criteria

The Essay section of the SAT is scored from 1-6. When working on your Essay it pays to know the criteria for a good score:

An essay that scores a 6 has:

  • A clearly stated position
  • Detailed, relevant support
  • Solid organization
  • Engaging standard English
  • Usually 300 words or more

An essay that scores a 5 has:

  • A clearly stated position
  • Relevant support
  • General organization
  • Standard English
  • Usually 250 words or more

A score of 4 has:

  • A clearly stated position
  • Relevant support
  • Some organization
  • Standard English
  • Usually 200 words or more
