Canadian DAT Scoring

How is the Canadian DAT Scored?

The Canadian Dental Aptitude Test scores are based on the number of correct answers - candidates are not penalized for guessing.

The conversion of raw scores to standard scores is based on the distribution of applicant performances. Scores used in the testing program range from 1 to 30. The standard score of 15 signifies average performance on a national basis.

The timing for the different sections of the DAT is as follows:

Section #1
CARVING DEXTERITY: 30 minutes

This examination is used to measure a candidate's manual dexterity. Each candidate is provided with a carving knife, metric ruler, marker, pencil and a piece of soap 84 millimeters in length and 16 millimeters in diameter.

Timing: The carving examination is 30 minutes in length with an additional 5 minutes at the beginning of the examination to allow the candidate to evaluate the carving design prior to the start of the cutting of the carving.

Section #2
SURVEY OF NATURAL SCIENCES: 60 minutes

Content is limited to those areas covered by a full year introductory university course in Biology and General Chemistry. The two science sections are not sub-divided in the exam, therefore it is important to pace yourself in order to complete the test. Separate sub scores are reported for each section.

Biology: 40 questions
General Chemistry: 30 questions
Total: 70 questions

Section #3
PERCEPTUAL ABILITY TEST: 60 minutes

This section of the exam covers two and three-dimensional perception i.e. angle discrimination, form development, cubes,  orthographic projections and apertures.

Total questions: 90
Total time: 60 minutes

Section #4
READING COMPREHENSION TEST: 50 minutes

Ability to read, organize, analyze and remember new information in dental and basic sciences is tested in the Reading Comprehension section as well as the ability to comprehend thoroughly when studying scientific information. The reading materials are typical of materials encountered in the first year of dental school and require no prior knowledge of the topic other than a basic undergraduate preparation in science. It consists of three reading passages:

Total number of passages: 3
#questions/passage: 15-17
Total time: 50 minutes

Total Length of the Exam (including breaks): 5 Hours
