University of Washington School of Dentistry

Profile:
The educational mission of the University of Washington's School of Dentistry is to prepare students to become competent health care professionals. The service mission of the school is to improve the health and well-being of the people of the community and the region through outreach programs that pay particular attention to minority and underserved populations. In 1992 the School of Dentistry opened the Regional Clinical Dental Research Center, one of only two funded in the United States. Its clinical research facilities are available for faculty and student use. The school's dedication to research is further enhanced by a Research Center in Oral Biology, a Dentist Scientist program, and a fellowship research training program for predoctoral students.

Advanced studies can lead to a certificate of proficiency in endodontics, oral medicine, orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics, or prosthodontics. Residency training is available in oral and maxillofacial surgery and general practice. The School of Dentistry also offers Masters of science (M.S.) and doctoral degrees (Ph.D.) in oral biology and postdoctoral study in applied behavioral science.

Admissions Requirements:
The majority of entering students have completed a baccalaureate degree. Prospective dental students are required to complete the following:

General Biology or Zoology - 8 Semester Units
General Chemistry with lab - 4 Semester Units
Organic Chemistry with lab - 4 Semester Units
General Microbiology - 3 Semester Units

Coursework in the social sciences and the humanities are also recommended.
