Teacher Certification at a Glance

Once you've completed your education training, you'll need to take the certification exam for your state, teaching subject, and grade level in order to teach in public schools. Requirements for teaching certification vary from state to state. Contact your state's Department of Education to learn more about what you'll need for certification. In most states, you'll need to take an exam, submit an application with transcripts, and complete a background check.

The American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence (ABCTE) offers a national certification credential. An ABCTE credential will not take the place of state certification, but can provide you with important professional development opportunities and will demonstrate that you have a solid grasp of the subject area you plan to teach. To learn more, visit the ABCTE website.

Without certification, you can teach in private schools or as a teaching assistant, although you may have to take different exams.
