Let's Get Physical

For human physiology, you'll need to know specific human needs of the maintenance functions.

Nutrition
Nutrition in humans is processed through the functional organization of the digestive system. The main parts of the system are the oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine. Chemical digestion then occurs through hydrolysis which splits large insoluble molecules into smaller ones.

Transport
Transport is accomplished through the circulatory system, which transports media (blood) through its vessels (arteries, veins, etc.), and is powered through the transport mechanism (heart).

Respiration
Respiration is conducted through cellular respiration and gas exchange. Cellular process is identical to other aerobic organisms, while gas exchange is conducted through the respiratory system.

The respiratory system consists of the nasal cavity, pharynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli. The mechanisms for breathing are regulated through the lungs and diaphragm, while gas exchange involve the capillaries and alveoli diffusing oxygen and carbon dioxide down between blood vessels and tissues.

Excretion
Excretion is conducted through the lungs, which remove waste from respiration, liver, sweat glands, and urinary system (kidneys).

Regulation
Regulation occurs in both the nervous and endocrine systems. The nervous system includes neurons, nerves, the Central Nervous System (including the brain and spinal cord), and the peripheral nervous system. The endocrine system includes the hypothalamus, pituitary, thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands, the Islets of Langerhans, and the gonads.

Locomotion
Locomotion in humans is carried out through bones, cartilage, muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Bones provide support and protection; cartilage provides pliable support, flexibility, and cushioning at the joints; muscles can be voluntary or involuntary and move bones in a (hopefully) coordinated manner; tendons attach muscles to bones; and ligaments connect bones to bones at the joints.
