The ISEE at a Glance

The ISEE at a Glance

The ISEE (or Independent School Entrance Examination) is developed and administered by the Educational Records Bureau (ERB), and is used by about 1,100 independent schools as part of the admissions process.

Who Takes It?

Not all private secondary schools require the ISEE. Consult your school's guidance counselor to determine if you have to take this test. There are three different versions of the ISEE:

Current Grade Level Appropriate Test
Grades 4-5 ISEE Lower Level
Grades 6-7 ISEE Middle Level
Grades 8-11 ISEE Upper Level

What's On It?

The ISEE is a standardized test administered over a three-hour period. It consists of a series of multiple-choice questions divided into four scored sections and one unscored essay section. All three levels contain the following sections:

  • Verbal Reasoning
  • Quantitative Reasoning
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Mathematics Achievement
  • Essay Section

When Is It?

The ISEE is offered on different dates throughout the year by different independent schools (2006-2007 test dates will not be released until late spring or early summer). The complete list of 2005-2006 test dates by school can be found in the 2005-2006 ISEE Student guide, which is available for download on the Educational Records Bureau site.

How Do You Register for It?

There is a $73 registration fee for the ISEE. You can register online at www.ISEEtest.org or by calling 800-446-0320. You can also fax a registration form to 919-682-5775.
