The NYS ELA/Math Exams at a Glance
The New York State Math and ELA exams are administered in May to all children in grades 3-8 in New York City public schools and in most private schools. The tests are designed to evaluate how students are progressing, who needs more assistance, and who should be held back.
This May, the tests are changing. In addition to new types of content, students will face more questions and less time to tackle each question. While the Standards tested have not changed, the number of performance indicators tested has been expanded.
