ECFMG sources indicate that they have an average 25% rejection
rate of paper and pencil USMLE applications. This is because
approximately 25% of the applicants accidentally incompletely
fill out portions or forget to sign the paperwork. The online
format does not allow you to continue if portions are not filled
out, thus making it a faster and more accurate way of
applying.
A representative from the ECFMG has stated that it is best if
doctors apply online for their USMLE testing permit. This is the
most expeditious way to obtain the permit. If you apply online
and submit the notarized Form 183, which contains your
photograph, it only takes two weeks to process.
If you apply using the 7-page application, however, it takes
7-8 weeks for the permit. This is true for both
domestic medical students as well as for medical graduates who
apply through the ECFMG.
We bring this to your attention because students will often
bring their paper USMLE applications to Kaplan Center staff to
proof before sending them to the ECFMG. Instead of sending in the
7-page application, we strongly encourage you to use the online
application process. It's faster and you won't risk delay by
forgetting to complete a portion of the form.
NOTE: The page with your picture (Form 183)
still needs to be notarized and submitted. Despite what the
application states, it does not need to be submitted
by the notary. Students may submit the
notarized form themselves. An English translated copy of your
diploma must be included as well.
