The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) estimates that 8 percent of US adults suffer from some type of phobia, which translates into about 11 ½ million people. Common phobias include agoraphobia (fear of open spaces or crowded places), claustrophobia (fear of confined spaces) or fear of heights (altophobia).
