Test Registration
Registering to take the Step 3 and scheduling your exam date
is a multistep process:
1. Secure the application
materials.
Unlike the Step 1 and Step 2 examinations, the individual state
medical boards administer the Step 3. Eligibility requirements
and application procedures vary among the states. You should
request specific information directly from the medical board of
the state where you wish to be licensed, or from the Federation
of State Medical Boards. Note that most of the states have
designated the Federation as the initial contact for Step 3
application information.

2. Complete the application and
submit with your application fee and a recent photo.
Unlike the Step 1 and 2 exams, your application form for Step 3
will not ask you to select a 3-month period in which you want to
take the test. You simply submit your application and allow 4-6
weeks for processing; you will then receive your scheduling
permit.
3. Receive your Scheduling
Permit.
Once your application is processed, you will receive a scheduling
permit in the mail. The scheduling permit indicates the
eligibility period, which starts immediately and goes for about
90 days.
4. Schedule your test date
directly with Sylvan Prometric.
Your scheduling permit will have instructions on contacting
Sylvan to select your test date (which must be within eligibility
period). Before making the call, you should decide on several
dates and your preferred location. Remember that the Step 3 is a
2-day examination that must be taken on 2 consecutive
business days! This makes it harder to secure your first-choice
dates. Call as soon as you get your scheduling permit!
Find the Sylvan Prometric Center nearest you. Select
"NBME" in the testing program pull-down menu.
