For Students Who Are Easily Bored
Are you the type of student who stares out the window during class hoping your secret mind powers will transport you to another world? Then Elon University, founded in 1889 by the Christian Church (now the United Church of Christ), may have just what you're looking for. The University is located on a picturesque 575-acre campus in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, east of Greensboro and northwest of Raleigh/Durham.
The Leader in Engaged Learning
Elon, a "dynamic, private, comprehensive university known for excellent arts and sciences," is recognized as a national leader in engaged learning, with top ratings in the National Survey of Student Engagement. With engaged learning, students actively participate in their learning, are able to defne their own learning goals, and can evaluate their own achievements. And Elon students are certainly engaged. According to its website, "Eighty percent of Elon students complete internships, one-third of students hold at least one leadership position in the 150 campus organizations and programs, and about 250 students perform undergraduate research with faculty mentors each year." In addition, Elon was named one of the top three universities in the nation for community service by the federal government's Corporation for National and Community Service.
The University includes Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences; the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business; the School of Communications; the School of Education; and the School of Law. Master's programs are offered in business administration and education, and doctoral programs include physical therapy and law.
Constant Innovation and Sense of Community
Elon University is proud of its close relationships between faculty and students, where constant innovation and a strong sense of community are a major part of the culture. On Tuesday mornings, Elon's website explains, "students, faculty and staff gather around Fonville Fountain for refreshments and fellowship." In addition, "weekly chapel services provide an interfaith worship experience."
Rooted in the historic tradition of the United Church of Christ, Elon's Mission Statement "embraces its founders' vision of an academic community that transforms mind, body, and spirit and encourages freedom of thought and liberty of conscience."
