Have you been jonesing to leave home and explore the world for as long you can remember? Then Goucher College in Towson, Maryland, has got your ticket. According to its website, Goucher was "the first college in the nation to pair required study abroad with a special travel stipend of $1,200 for every undergraduate."
Real-World, Hands-On Training
Goucher believes that "international awareness" should be a requirement for anybody who wants to lead a full and satisfying life in today's global community. To that end, Goucher believes its strong majors and rigorous curriculum should be matched with a variety of real-world opportunities and experiences. Through "internships, community service, and study abroad—and a first-rate arts and sciences academic program"—Goucher's overriding principle is to graduate students who "engage the world as true global citizens."
As one student put it: "I really liked that Goucher required you to go abroad; other schools didn't have that. I think that if you just stick to yourself and the things you know, you could be really closed-minded. I think it's good to open yourself up and experience other cultures."
Education Without Boundaries
Goucher College is a coeducational institution with a philosophy dedicated to the "interdisciplinary traditions of the liberal arts and a broad international perspective on education." The college features 31 majors and six interdisciplinary programs, all of which stress a big picture perspective of how one area of study relates to another. As a residential college, Goucher is proud to offer an exceptional campus setting that "blurs the boundaries between living and learning."
Goucher sees its liberal education as a way to educate people who are thoughtful and engaged, who can see the world broadly, and who are flexible of mind, body, and spirit. Goucher students tend to be critical thinkers, strong communicators, and they are adaptable to the world's changing landscape.
