The Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University was established in 1974. The school has a low faculty to student ratio. Starting in the third year, students are assigned 16 hours of clinical per week. Prior to graduation, students attending the Michigan College of Optometry will typically experience in excess of 1500 patient examinations. In addition to an O.D., the school offers a B.S. in Vision Science and three post-doctoral residency programs.

Admissions Requirements:

80 semester hours of completed course work are required prior to admission. Three letters of recommendation are required, including one each from a college professor and an optometrist. A personal statement is also required. Required courses include:

English/Composition - 6 semester hours

General Biology or Zoology with a lab - 6 semester hours

General Inorganic Chemistry with a lab - 6 semester hours

College Physics with a lab - 6 semester hours

Physiology, pre-professional with a lab - 4 semester hours

Microbiology with a lab - 4 semester hours

Organic Chemistry with a lab - 6 semester hours

Biochemistry - 4 semester hours

College mathematics through Calculus I

Statistics - 2 semester hours

Humanities (from two different areas to include one speech course) - 6 semester hours

Behavioral Science - 9 semester hours with a minimum of 3 semester hours in general psychology

It is strongly suggested that students take additional upper division courses.
