MCAT FAQs

MCAT FAQs

AAMC released information about the MCAT test taking experience. For more information, visit the AAMC website.

  • Q: When can I register to take the MCAT?
  • A: Registration will usually open 4 or 5 months before a scheduled 2008 MCAT test date. You can view the registration information here.
  • Q: What's the test environment like? How many people can each location hold? Will it be noisy?
  • A: Although it varies, each testing center can accommodate up to 16 test takers. Noise-canceling headphones will be provided—test takers cannot use/bring their own.
  • Q: How much will it cost to take the 2008 MCAT?
  • A: The cost to take the exam is $210.
  • Q: Can I take notes or eliminate answer choices on screen?
  • A: Test takers can highlight info on screen and also cross out answer choices on screen. They cannot take notes on screen but will be provided scratch paper upon arrival at the testing center.
  • Q: Can I go back and change my answers on the computer-based MCAT?
  • A: Students can go back and change answers until the time limit for that individual section expires. Once a section is done, they cannot go back.
  • Q: Are the 2008 MCAT essays typed? Is there spell check?
  • A: The two Writing Sample questions are typed. Students can cut, paste and copy, but there is no spell check feature.
  • Q: How quickly will my computer-based MCAT scores be returned?
  • A: Scores will be ready in 30 days and will most likely be returned even faster in the future.
  • Q: How many times can I take the MCAT each year? Do I have to wait before registering to take it again?
  • A: Students can take the MCAT 3 times per year, but can only be registered for 1 at a time. There is no 'waiting period' between tests, meaning students could take the exam on one day and begin the registration process for another exam the next day.
  • Q: What should I bring with me on Test Day?
  • A: At least two forms of government-issued photo IDs, like a driver's license and passport. Only one is required, but it's good to have a backup. You'll also submit an electronic thumbprint and go through a signature verification process.
