Not Just Stars
Sure, physics explains how the universe works, but how does
that apply to medicine?
Well, just like the universe, the human body has its own
form of physics—the physics of physiology—that explains how
it functions. Many medical procedures, including radiation
therapy, stem from basic (and not so basic) physics
principles. As well, physics can be used to fully
understand how medical instruments and machinery operate
(for example, an ultrasound machine).
The Gravity of It All
Physics is an essential part of the pre-med curriculum
because it relies heavily on a problem-solving approach and
develops the kind of thought patterns medical professionals
use on a day-to-day basis. The intense subject matter
forces students to visualize solutions, draw diagrams,
memorize formulas, and utilize data in ways they may have
not considered before.
Out of This World
What makes physics so fascinating is that it offers a
unique perspective to the human body, and yet it's related
to all of the other sciences you've studied. In addition,
the course material offers a wealth of areas to explore,
from the laws of thermodynamics to learning the composition
of cells, atoms, and planets.
Time is Relative
The best time to take physics is your junior year—it's the
best way to ensure that these complex concepts are fresh in
your mind around MCAT time. And by your junior year, you've
already gained knowledge in every other science relevant to
medicine. What better place to apply what you've learned
than in the course that explains the big picture?
It's Not Rocket
Science
Okay, so physics is rocket science. Don't let that
scare you. On the other extreme, don't get so complacent as
to think that you can cruise through physics without
lifting an eyelash. The truth is, physics is another
opportunity for to understand how the body works and apply
this information to what you already know. Consider each
science an open door—and perhaps a future career path.
Don't think of physics as another bothersome course with a
lab— it can be your key to the universe.
