Psychology Program Options

Psychology is the general study of behavior in humans and other animals, both in individuals and groups. A psychologist can specialize in research, documenting and defining changes in mental and emotional characteristics. Others use their expertise to counsel and rehabilitate patients directly.

There are many subdivisions and specialties of psychology. Each branch has many practical applications. Occupations as varied as daycare instruction and aircraft engineering incorporate concepts from psychological research. A few of these specialties include, but are by no means limited to:

Clinical Psychology is the diagnosis and treatment of psychological disorders. These afflictions include common conditions like post-partum depression to rare diseases like schizophrenia. Some clinical psychologists focus on one type of phobia or condition, such as eating disorders, while others serve as general counselors. Neuroscience is closely related to this discipline tries to correlate biochemical systems in the brain and nervous system to specific behaviors.

Environmental Psychology is concerned with impact of physical spaces on psychological processes. Psychologists in this field may tackle projects such as gauging public opinion on new construction projects, or providing designs on entertainment facilities.

Developmental Psychology is the study of age-related changes in behavior. Psychologists in this branch measure stages of emotional and intellectual development. Many work with children, crafting programs for pre-schools and clinics. Others choose to study the effects of aging on the memory.

Social Psychology looks at how people react to one another. Different social environments have a powerful effect on private thoughts and group dynamics. Many social psychologists dedicate their study to topics such as discrimination, loyalty, and management structures. Universities, human resource departments and advertising agencies rely heavily on social psychology research.

Youll gain exposure to these and many other fields in your course of study. Whether you enjoy research or helping others directly, a degree in psychology is full of opportunities.
