Building habits of mind
To be successful, students must build successful habits of mind. They need to learn how to be organized, identify and make use of appropriate resources for study, break down large tasks into more manageable subtasks, and follow through and self-monitor on the tasks they begin.

An Effective Study Skills Program
Study Skills has five units, each addressing a discrete set of study skills while engaging students in high-interest content presented in a full-color magazine. The study skills covered include:
- Creating Routines
- Taking Notes
- Doing Research
- Writing a Paper
- Preparing for and Taking Tests
In-Depth Materials
Instructional material is designed to expose students to a wide range of topics and genres while maintaining readability for struggling readers:
- Explore Magazine—a five-volume color magazine to be used as a springboard for discussion and activities.
- Student Planner—an organizer for student use during the program and throughout the school year which includes pages for a weekly class schedule, important contact numbers, and a month-by-month calendar for long-range planning.
- In-Depth Teacher's Guide—includes 20 workshop-style lessons and blackline masters as needed.
