Dr. Adam Aponte

Dr. Adam Aponte was born and raised in East Harlem, NY the product of Puerto Rican parents. He attended the public school system in NYC and in 1986 was admitted to City College of the City University of New York where, in 1990, he graduated with a BS in Biology. In 1990 he was admitted to the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in NYC and received his MD degree. Dr. Aponte did a three-year residency in Pediatrics at the Mount Sinai Hospital, which he completed in 1997. He was board certified in Pediatric Medicine in 1997. Upon completion of his residency training he began working with the Children's Aid Society, which is a social service agency in New York City in existence for more than 150 years. There Dr. Aponte worked with a foster care population and became knowledgeable about the social and health issues faced by this group. He also became very knowledgeable surrounding School Based Health Centers and oversaw the operations of three such centers in New York City's Washington Heights neighborhood.

Dr. Aponte maintained his Academic Appointment at the Mount Sinai Hospital and the School of Medicine and in 1998 was appointed Associate Director of Minority Affairs (now Associate Director for Recruitment & Retention). In this capacity he is responsible for the recruitment and retention of Minority medical students to the school as well as helping in the recruitment of housestaff and faculty. He has served on the medical school's Admission's Committee as well as a member of the Pediatric Residency Selection Committee. Dr. Aponte travels around the Northeast region attending recruitment fairs and talking with students about preparing for medical school. He uses his own life experience as a poor young boy growing up in an impoverished and crime ridden neighborhood to help students become motivated about their career choice and inspiring them to achieve their dreams and let no obstacle stand in their way. He is very vocal about the plight of the underserved and has worked to educate the community about health access and health disparities.

In May of 2000 Dr. Aponte was appointed Chair of Pediatrics for North General Hospital located in New York City. In this capacity he is responsible for developing innovative programs to boost the care received by children in the East and Central Harlem neighborhoods. In January 2002, Dr. Aponte created and was appointed Chairman of the Ambulatory Care Department at North General Hospital. In this capacity, Dr. Aponte is responsible for overseeing all outpatient medical, pediatric and surgical services for the hospital. Dr. Aponte was named as one of Crain's New York Business Magazine "40 under 40" rising stars in 2005 due to his accomplishments thus far.

In order expand his reach Dr. Aponte began a session called "Medical Mondays with Dr. Aponte" which is broadcast on a local New York City Radio Station, Hot 97. This station reaches a young urban population and twice a month Dr. Aponte took calls from listeners regarding health issues as well as providing information on preventive health measures. Dr. Aponte also used this activity to advise young listeners on how to be successful and perhaps one day become physicians themselves.

As part of his efforts to help the residents of East and Central Harlem live better lives Dr. Aponte joined efforts with the Manhattan Borough President's "Go-Green East Harlem" initiative aimed at improving the environment which can have an impact on health and educate the community. Dr. Aponte is Chair of the sub-committee on "Public Health and Asthma" and helped develop a concept paper for the creation of the East Harlem Asthma Center. In addition he collaborated with another sub-committee which was creating a healthy Cookbook for East Harlem and contributed a piece on the importance of balancing a healthy diet with physical activity.

In December 2008 Dr. Aponte was named medical director of the Brownsville Multi-Service Family Health Center in Brownsville Brooklyn and is now using his talents to help this Federally Qualified Health Center broaden its reach in the community and address the health disparities that plague it.

Dr. Aponte challenges his colleagues to reach back into underserved and Minority communities to serve as role models and mentors to assure that others attain their full potential and reach their life's dream as he has. He also continues to work on increasing the diversity of the healthcare workforce and feels strongly that diversity with help to address the many health disparities witnessed in underserved and minority communities.
