Illinois Bar Exam Information

  • About the Bar Exam

Illinois has adopted the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE®). It is a two-day exam, and takes place on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of February and July. The Multistate Essay Exam (MEE®) and the Multistate Performance Tests (MPT®s) are administered on Tuesday; the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE®) is administered on Wednesday. Note that Illinois has transitioned to the UBE with the July 2019 administration.

    • Day 2: 200-question, multiple-choice Multistate Bar Exam (MBE®).
  • Subjects Tested

Business Associations (Agency and Partnership; Corporations and Limited Liability Companies), Civil Procedure, Conflict of Laws, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Family Law, Real Property, Torts, Trusts and Estates (Decedents' Estates; Trusts and Future Interests), and Uniform Commercial Code (Secured Transactions).

  • Bar Exam Dates

    • July 27-28, 2021
    • February 22-23, 2022
  • Grading

A total UBE® scaled score of 266 or higher is needed to pass. The MBE® is weighted at 50% of the score, the Essays are weighted at 30%, and the MPT®s are weighted at 20%.

  • MPRE®

The Illinois Board of Admissions to the Bar requires a MPRE® score of 80 or more. It is not required that an applicant take the MPRE® before taking the bar exam, however before admission to the bar an applicant must have received a passing score.

  • Reciprocity

Applications for those pursuing Illinois admission based on a transferred UBE® score of 266 ot higher in another UBE® jurisdiction will be accepted starting in January 1, 2019. Illinois accepts MBE® scores of 141 or higher transferred from other jurisdictions provided the following requirements are met:

    • The transferred MBE® score must have been attained in an exam administered within 13 months preceding the exam for which you have applied
    • Applicant must have passed the entire exam within the 13 months preceding the exam for which you have applied
    • Applicant cannot have previously failed the Illinois bar exam
    • Score transfer must be received by set forth deadline for the exam for which you have applied

Illinois does not allow concurrent testing with other jurisdictions. UBE® applicants must take all portions of the examination (MPT®, MEE® and MBE®) in the same UBE® jurisdiction and in the same exam administration to earn a portable UBE® score. A passing score on the Illinois bar exam is valid in Illinois for four years.
