We recently asked our MCAT fans and followers on Facebook and Twitter for their suggestions on books to help their fellow students stay inspired for a future in medicine.
Below are a few of their most popular submissions, spanning a range of disciplines; some you may recognize as classics and some may be new to you, but feel free to share with your students and colleagues and let us know what you think!
- Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on Imperfect Science by Atul Gawande
- Anatomy of an Epidemic: Magic Bullets, Psychiatric Drugs, and the Astonishing Rise of Mental Illness in America by Robert Whitaker
- Fragile Beginnings: Discoveries and Triumphs in the Newborn ICU by Adam Wolfberg
- Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World by Tracy Kidder
- The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer by Siddhartha Mukherjee
- The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot
- An Imperfect Offering: Humanitarian Action in the 21st Century by Dr. James Obrinski

Special materials for pre-health advisors:
Our pavilion at the NAAHP National Meeting next month will include a wealth of new information created specifically for advisors. Included in that information will be papers outlining some of our most recent research on our prep programs (including statistics on test scores and student behaviors), as well as the results of our recent work with institutional programs.
While it’s unfortunate, we know that some of you will be unable to join us in Baltimore; however, we don’t want you to be kept out of the loop! We’ll be distributing a number of the materials that will be available at the meeting, so if you have colleagues that you feel would benefit from those materials please encourage them to register for email alerts (look for “Subscribe” in the right sidebar) from this blog.
