Law School Admissions in the Headlines: The February LSAT Crunch Time Edition

January 29, 2014

law school newsLate January is crunch time for LSAT takers. It’s either (likely) their last chance to take the exam before applications close for 2014 or they are real go-getters taking the exam early in preparation for 2015. In any case, January is not a dull month in the law school admissions process!  With that in mind…here are some of the latest, most interesting headlines about the landscape from media outlets across the country.

It’s been a rough few years in the law school space between plummeting applications, a drop in LSAT takers, questions about the value of a legal education and a still struggling to recover job market for new lawyers.  That said, according to a new survey, law school students are still surprisingly somewhat positive about all that’s going on. (The Wall Street Journal)

The American Bar Association’s Task Force on the Future of Legal Education has released its long awaited final report  which finds that American law schools are too expensive and too much alike. (The New York Law Journal)

Here’s one great way to increase the number of applicants and recruit excellent students. The Villanova University Law School announced earlier this month that it would double the number of full scholarships available to members of the incoming 2014 class, to as many as 50. (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

Just because you did well on the LSAT, graduated from a good law school and passed the bar doesn’t mean you can become a practicing attorney. Character matters, as one dishonest journalist turned wannabe lawyer found out the hard way. (The Los Angeles Times)

One of the things we always advise pre-law students is to look at the statistics behind the law school rankings – look under the hood.  If a school’s bar passage rates are important to your students in helping them determine where to apply and enroll ( they should be!), this article will be of interest.
