LSAT-jobsAn article in the ABA Journal reveals the findings of Matt Leichter, a blogger on the Law School Tuition Bubble. Certainly, it is common knowledge that job prospects for students graduating law school are poor; Leichter shows that some states fare even more poorly than others.

Leichter based his findings on Bureau of Labor Statistics information and the number of law school grads, according to the American Bar Association. According to Leichter, the state with the worst statistics is Mississippi with a ratio of 10.53 law grads for each job opening. The other nine states on the list are Michigan, Delaware, Nebraska, Vermont, Massachusetts, Indiana, Oregon, Louisiana and New York.  It is interesting to note the disparity in the ratio of grads to job opening – New York has a ratio of 2.92 law grads for each opening and number 2 state Michigan has a ratio of 6.48 law grads for each opening, as contrasted with Mississippi’s high numbers.

The article points out that according to these statistics, the best states for law school grads are Nevada, Wyoming and Alaska.

It should be pointed out that these statistics look at the number of students who graduate from a law school in the state and does not take into account whether or not those students remain in the state after graduation.
