Here are some of the latest, most interesting headlines about the medical school admissions and medical education landscapes from media outlets across the country. We’re seeing some history in the making regarding the MCAT…let’s start there.
Good news for pre-med students concerned about a lack of MCAT seats before the test changes in Spring 2015: the AAMC has added October and November test dates in 2014, as well as testing dates in January 2015. These additional testing dates are the first time in recent MCAT history that the exam will be offered later than September, which may help alleviate the rush to take the MCAT before changes hit. Future medical school students should certainly get used to being AROUND bodies…but how about standing ON bodies? 1,000 corpses were found buried on the site of a future medical school in Mississippi, which is understandably causing a lot of concern and delays. (USA Today)
Lawyers have something to teach doctors…and it is not about how to avoid malpractice claims. Instead it is about how the medical profession needs to avoid being beset by the serious issues that the legal profession is now facing. Serious stuff. Ask an attorney. (The Atlantic)
Currently there are only a handful of MDs in Congress. On the flip side, more members of Congress come from the legal profession than any other background. One medical school student in Rhode Island is trying to change that. (The Brown Daily Herald – Brown University)
As you’ve likely advised the students you help, pre-meds should turn to current medical schools to help them decide where to apply and where to ultimately enroll. Invaluable information about one of the important decisions in their lives. (U.S. News & World Report)
