Do Your Advisees Need Help Beating the GRE?

One of the most common questions that my fellow Kaplan teachers and I hear when we meet students on campuses is, “So… how should I get ready for the GRE?” While this question seems straightforward, there are actually a lot of factors that go into successful GRE preparation. Kaplan’s Director of GRE Programs, Lee Weiss, hosted a virtual event to break down the key components of test day success, and we recorded the event so that other students could get the important information discussed.

The video is accessible at http://bit.ly/pFywMq, and in it Lee covers such topics as:

- The GRE’s content and structure

Lee discusses the test’s framework and scoring scale, so that students know exactly what to expect from a multi-stage test, and how to begin setting a target score.

- Methods with which to approach each question-type

The GRE is a standardized test, and it is best-tackled with a standardized approach. Lee teaches a series of test problems and demonstrates the Kaplan methods and strategies for each question-type, so that students understand what the problems they see on test day will require of them and how to take each one apart.

- Timeline and planning

Simply put, the GRE is not a test for which anyone should cram – while it is only one piece of graduate school applications, it is the one factor that applicants can still impact significantly whether they are freshmen, seniors, or college graduates with a decade of work experience. Lee walks students through how to set an appropriate preparation timeline.

- Prep options

Once students have set a target score and have set a preparation timeline, they need a solid plan to identify their strengths and areas of opportunity and to improve their performance so that they’re fully ready and confident by test day. Lee introduces students to Kaplan’s different options, so that they can find the most effective method of prep for their schedules and learning styles.

If students want to attend upcoming events, practice tests, or sample classes to gain additional insight from Kaplan GRE experts such as Lee, they can go to kaptest.com/GRE and type their zip code into the “Free Events” search bar.
