Anxiety: The Difficult Emotion
We’ve covered a lot of do’s and don’ts for NCLEX day. You’ve followed the rules for the day, you’ve prepared for the NCLEX, but you know that anxiety can strike at any time, and you know that anxiety is one of the most common reasons for unsuccessful NCLEX testing. You can take steps to avoid anxiety issues, and we’re going to give you some great ideas. However, we also know that you have tips as well, and one great way to prevent anxiety is to recognize that you have an NCLEX “family” who can help you get through this! Please like our Facebook page and share some of your anxiety reducing practices. Make sure they fit in with the NCLEX testing taking rules!
Before you take the test:
- Practice every day with the NCLEX as the focus, whether you’re doing questions, reviewing questions or studying content.
- Do not cram! Most students do not feel better about their learning after cramming, and that increases anxiety.
- Talk to other who are NOT freaking out about their knowledge or the exam!
- Put this on a post-it note and read it after EVERY study session: “I do know this stuff! J”
The day before the test tends to be a VERY anxious day:
- Hang around with people who are not taking the test (especially the next day).
- Do not talk about the test.
- DO NOT STUDY! You will not remember what you cram on this day.
- Do something physical: walk, run, shop, play.
- Do funny things that make you laugh–watch your favorite funny movie.
- NO ALCOHOL! The after affects of alcohol increase anxiety.
- SLEEP THE NIGHT BEFORE. If you are tired from physical activity and laughing you will sleep. Having a great night’s sleep is one of the best ways to manage anxiety.
Day of the test:
- Put this post-it note on your steering wheel: “I can do this!”
- Get to the testing site EARLY! Rushing will increase your anxiety.
- BREATHE!
- Take your breaks, and
- REMEMBER, YOU KNOW THIS STUFF!!!
