Go with your gut…

Happy Tuesday to you!  The majority of our blog team is on vacation or in meetings this week and next, and since August is knocking on your door too we know you’re busy enjoying what’s left of your summers.  So… our next handful of posts will be short, sweet, and to the point (which is more commonly referred to as pictures—although they’re worth a thousand words).  We hope our slightly cheesy attempts at humor, friendly reminders, and educational tidbits bring a smile to your face.

Go with your gut

Today’s friendly reminder deals with test-taking…  I vividly remember my 1st grade teacher telling me that my first answer choice was always the right one, but now that I’ve grown up and spent the last nine years working with Kaplan students, I know otherwise.

Some testing programs will track student’s answer changes and show whether they should or should not go with their first instincts.  This is important because not everyone has a good gut—in fact, if a student is unprepared for an exam or a nervous test-taker they might have a very bad gut indeed!   However if you can help them diagnose their bad gut, with practice they can stop rushing through the exam, eliminate their need to host an internal debate on each answer choice, and start thoroughly reading the question.  Over time (hopefully before NCLEX) the students will stop second guessing their instincts because they’ve become better test-takers.

Unfortunately I couldn’t find any cute pictures to illustrate the above thoughts, so for today, we’re back to the tried and [sometimes] true statement, “Go with your gut.”
