About the Advance Placement Exams
The AP Exams are a collection of 38 different tests within six specific categories: Arts, English, History & Social Science, Math & Computer Science, Sciences, and World Languages & Cultures. Most exams are two to three hours long. The first part of the exam usually consists of multiple choice questions with four or five answer choices. The second part of the exam usually consists of free-response questions that may be in the form of an essay, a solution to a problem, or a spoken response.
The AP Exams are designed to measure what you know about specific subjects. Critical reading and thinking skills are important, but the main purpose of these tests is to determine exactly what you know about Art History, Psychology, Statistics, and so on.
How Are They Used?
Your AP Exam scores help colleges evaluate your achievement in your college-level AP course and, at some schools, can be used to earn college credit or skip the equivalent freshman course. Your score is a weighted combination of your scores from the two parts of the exam. AP Exams do not penalize students for choosing incorrect answers to multiple choice questions. Final AP scores are reported on a scale of 1 to 5:
- 5 = extremely well qualified
- 4 = well qualified
- 3 = qualified
- 2 = possibly qualified
- 1 = no recommendation
Which Exams Should You Take?
The simple answer: take the exams for the courses in which you’re enrolled. However, according to the College Board website, “the AP Program doesn’t require you to take an AP course before taking an AP exam.” If you’re taking an AP course at your school, your school’s AP coordinator will organize your registration with you and your AP teacher. If you’re home-schooled or at a school that doesn’t offer AP, you should contact AP Services to arrange a list of AP coordinators willing to test outside students. You can take as many AP Exams as you want, but be sure to balance the number of tests with your ability to properly prepare for all of them.
