GRE Tutor Benji Hughes

BENJI HUGHES

Rhodes College

Benji is an alum of Rhodes College, where he majored in English, focusing in fairy tales and late medieval lit. After school, he wrote roleplaying games by day and worked as a biker bar bouncer by night, until Kaplan rescued him and put him in the classroom, where he's been since 2006. Benji's students can expect tough love, straight talk, and lots of humor. He loves helping students understand the questions behind the questions on the test. When he's not raising scores, you can find Benji rescuing guinea pigs or taking his niece to science fiction conventions.

GRE Tutor Elisa Davis

ELISA DAVIS

Wesleyan University

Elisa holds a BA from Wesleyan University in American Studies and a master's degree in accounting from the NYU Stern school. After an extensive career in accounting, budgeting, and strategic planning, she held local elected office and also managed several online forums. Raised in the testing world (her father worked for a large non-profit testmaker, and Elisa spent college summers developing tests), Elisa returned to her testing roots in 2005 to become a dynamic and dedicated Kaplan teacher and tutor. When not working with students, you'll find Elisa at the movies or pursuing her love of live music.

GRE Tutor Kim Crowley

KIM CROWLEY

College of Wooster

Kim double-majored in music therapy and music education at The College of Wooster. She scored a perfect 800 on the verbal portion of her GRE and went for a master’s in Industrial and Organizational Psychology at Springfield College. Outside of Kaplan, she is an independent training and development consultant to a variety of businesses and nonprofits. She has been teaching at Kaplan since 1993 and loves the moment when students say, “Wow it’s much easier this way!” When she's not tutoring, you can find Kim facilitating community dialogue, hiking, and singing with vocal improvisation groups.

GRE Tutor Rachel Reina

RACHEL REINA

Kean University

Rachel holds a BS in chemistry from Kean University and an MSE in environmental engineering from Princeton. However, she started at a community college, where her placement test score barely qualified her for basic precalculus. Now, with a 95th percentile Math/Verbal average GRE score and eight years of Kaplan teaching experience, she’s uniquely qualified to understand your challenges, and will work with you to transform your own score using targeted practice and diligent analysis. When she’s not teaching or tutoring, Rachel can be found trying to distract her tweens from their mobile devices.

GRE Tutor Debbie Brown

DEBBIE BROWN

Haverford College

Debbie majored in chemistry at Haverford College and scored in the 99th percentile on the GRE. She received a Masters degree in Chemistry from Caltech and a master's degree in human genetics (counseling) from the University of Pittsburgh's School of Public Health. She has been teaching for Kaplan since 1998 and loves helping a test score cease to be a barrier to a student's goals. When she's not teaching and tutoring for Kaplan, she's teaching and tutoring her homeschooled children.

GRE Tutor Michael Collins

MICHAEL COLLINS

North Carlonia State

Michael graduated from North Carolina State University summa cum laude with a bachelor’s in mathematics and earned his master’s in linguistics from The Ohio State University. Michael’s diverse educational background allows him to bring a unique breadth and depth of knowledge to his students. While organized and systemic in his approach, he thinks creatively and flexibly and encourages his students to do the same. Michael is patient and loves to add a little humor to his lessons. When he’s not tutoring, Michael works as a freelance composer.

GRE Tutor Alana Ohana

ALANA OHANA

University of Tennessee

Alana has been with Kaplan almost 15 years, during which time she has performed many jobs helping students earn higher test scores—everything from writing texts to being in Lesson On Demand videos. She has also helped write explanations for test questions and create other Kaplan resources. She currently resides just outside Nashville with her family, and, in her spare time, she writes suspense novels while also enrolled as a student in the Human Forensic Identification MS program at UT at the Body Farm.

GRE Tutor Nick Bascom

NICK BASCOM

Clemson University

Nick graduated from Clemson University in 2007 with degrees in biology, English, and Spanish. After taking both the LSAT (180) and the GRE (1560), he accepted an offer to attend Penn State’s MFA program in creative writing. When Nick isn’t teaching students how to beat standardized tests, he’s writing novels, poems, news articles, and songs. As a graduate student, Nick taught a variety of composition courses and hasn’t stopped teaching since. In 2013, he was Kaplan’s National Teacher of the Year. A college athlete, he still plays soccer in his hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio.
