New York, NY (August 19, 2019) — Kaplan, a premier provider of educational and career services, announced it has acquired certain of the healthcare test preparation assets of Becker Professional Education, a subsidiary of Adtalem Global Education (NYSE: ATGE), a leading global workforce solutions provider. In conjunction with the acquisition, Kaplan also entered into multi-year deals with Adtalem to provide USMLE review programs to its two medical schools, Ross University School of Medicine and American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

The acquisition includes certain assets related to Becker’s U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) review programs.

The move expands Kaplan’s reach among medical students preparing for the USMLE. The acquisition is also Kaplan’s latest signal of its commitment to investment in the health care and education space. Last year, Kaplan advanced its capabilities in health care training with the acquisition of i-Human Patients, a leader in virtual interactive medical simulation.

“With the U.S. facing a projected shortage in healthcare professionals in the coming years, medical students are becoming an increasingly vital demographic, which makes ensuring their training and development critically important,” said Steven Marietti, President of Kaplan Prep & Achieve. “Along with our partner schools, we’re committed to providing more students with high-quality preparation and training resources to help them on their professional journeys to becoming licensed physicians and nurses. This acquisition will help us expand educational support for future healthcare professionals.”

New York, NY (July 28, 2019) — On Thursday, July 25, the State Bar of California inadvertently leaked essay question topics for the July 30-31 state bar exam to a number of law school deans in California. Those topics are Civil Procedure; Remedies/Constitutional Law; Criminal Law and Procedure; Professional Responsibility; and Contracts. The State Bar also inadvertently shared the task and topic of the performance test question, which will be a memo format with Evidence issues. Standard procedure is that the topics to be tested on the state bar exam are not known in advance, requiring test takers to prepare for all of the nearly 20 topic possibilities. Following the Thursday leak, on Saturday, July 27, at 9:16 PM PT, the State Bar emailed the leaked topics to all California bar takers to ensure that no exam taker would have an advantage going into Test Day.

The following statement, which includes advice for California bar exam takers, comes from Tammi Rice, Vice President, Kaplan Bar Review:

“This leak represents an unprecedented situation for a widely taken bar exam and while there are still questions to be answered about how this happened, right now students’ only concern should be their final days of review. The good news for exam takers is that it eliminates about a dozen possible essay topics, so they know exactly which essay topics to focus on and which to ignore in their last days of preparation. This gives them the opportunity to hone their skills in the lead up to Test Day. We advise students to remain focused on their prep and to not let this throw them off their game. For all the students who have been studying hard for the bar exam: they’ve got this.”

The California Bar Examination is generally considered to be the most challenging in the country. According to the National Conference of Bar Examiners, in 2018, 12,772 aspiring practicing lawyers took the California exam.
