Iowa City, Iowa (November 5, 2018) — Students who are eligible to take the ACT® test with a fee waiver now have more online learning resources to help them prepare for test day, with the introduction of ACT® Rapid Review by Kaplan. Last year more than 500,000 students qualified for a fee waiver.
ACT Rapid Review by Kaplan is a suite of products offering all the benefits of interactive livestreaming instruction and a comprehensive video library. Students can drop into a live virtual classroom, or watch recorded video sessions, all taught by expert instructors.
“We created ACT Rapid Review with the individual learner in mind,” said ACT’s Chief Commercial Officer, Suzana Delanghe. “We know that underserved learners, and students who register to take the ACT with a fee waiver, in particular, would benefit from more flexible and engaging learning resources. This solution with our partners at Kaplan provides those students with live and interactive instruction, and more opportunities to develop the skills and hone the knowledge they need to shine on test day and be successful in college and career.”
ACT Rapid Review offers three options to fit students’ unique needs and learning styles:
“We are excited to expand access to these best in class preparation options. With ACT Rapid Review by Kaplan, students receive exceptionally high-quality live and self-paced instruction that supports test takers incredibly well,” said Lee Weiss, vice president, Kaplan Test Prep. “We’re so proud to support students on their college admission journey with highly engaging, interactive preparation for the ACT, and to make these offerings so affordable for all students and free for those who need them most.”
In keeping with their shared mission to help fee waiver eligible students be prepared for test day, ACT and Kaplan will give the Rapid Review All Access offering for free to all students registering for the exam with a fee waiver. The Live, On Demand, and All Access products are available to all other test takers for $40 to $99.
Kaplan Test Prep’s expert teachers will provide instruction for all courses in the suite. In addition, ACT will continue to offer ACT Online Prep to all students.
ACT and Kaplan first partnered in April 2016 to create the only official online ACT preparation program offering live, content-based instruction from teachers.

New York, NY (October 31, 2018) — Amid reports of possible low turnout among young voters, a new Kaplan Test Prep survey indicates that at least one segment of younger voters says it plans to participate at the ballot box: college-educated students who are planning to become future professionals. A new survey of nearly 400 18-29 year olds who are preparing for graduate-level admissions or professional licensure exams shows that 93% of those who are registered to vote say they plan to do so in the midterm elections on November 6*. In contrast to a recent poll by the Institute of Politics (IOP) at Harvard Kennedy School that showed just 40 percent of young Americans 18-29 across the general U.S. population plan to vote in the midterms, Kaplan’s survey represented students preparing to be lawyers, doctors, nurses, business people, engineers, educators, psychologists and others — America’s future professional ranks.
Those surveyed mentioned immigration, healthcare, climate change, women’s rights and civil rights as the issues that are most motivating them to vote next month. As one respondent shared, “My education would be worthless if I did not take the opportunity to vote.” Another shared, “I believe if you don’t vote then you do not have the right to complain about the government.”
When asked what they feel are effective ways to make their voices heard, this group of young voters largely think that traditional activities like voting and getting out the vote are the best ways to channel their energies, rather than posting on social media.
“These survey results show a high level of interest in this year’s election among America’s future professionals, which is notable given that younger Americans generally vote at a much lower rate than their parents and grandparents. It also offers insight into what their values are and what is motivating them to turn out,” said Yariv Alpher, executive director of research, Kaplan Test Prep. “Election Day is only a few days away and we’re looking forward to seeing how these particular voters make their voices heard.”

New York, NY (October 25, 2018) — The following statement about the annual SAT scores report released by the College Board showing an 8-point median score increase from 1060 in 2017 to 1068 this year comes from Monica Noll, manager of teacher training, Kaplan Test Prep. Noll has worked at Kaplan for nearly 10 years and has helped thousands of aspiring college students in her current role and as a teacher:
“We think there are a few key factors that explain the median SAT score increase. First, the Class of 2017 was the first class to go through the new SAT and understandably had fewer new resources available, less time with the new content, and were making big decisions on when to test. Members of the Class of 2018 had more time and more resources available to prepare. There was an increased level of comfort because of this. Second, unlike members of the Class of 2017, who could either choose to take the old SAT or new SAT, members of the Class of 2018 had no such choice — they could only take the new SAT. This allowed them to singularly focus. Additionally, schools and counselors have become much more knowledgeable about the exam and are better equipped to help their students and answer parents’ questions.
“We think it’s encouraging that SAT scores are on the rise and the increase in test takers implies that more students than ever are considering college, which is important. But we need to be careful about drawing any big conclusions about a possible trend. Keep in mind that this is only the second SAT scores report that includes results from students who only took the new SAT, which was revamped in March 2016. We really need another year or two of data to glean concrete trends.”

New York, NY (October 23, 2018) — $192,000. It’s a figure engrained in the minds of many aspiring doctors. That’s the median debt for graduating medical students, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. But will free tuition lower that number? The New York University School of Medicine’s recent decision to go tuition-free for all students, regardless of their income, has the widespread support of medical schools across the continent as a good solution to alleviate debt burden, according to Kaplan Test Prep’s 2018 survey of medical school admissions officers, though only a handful have plans to adopt a similar policy*.
Among the 70 medical schools surveyed, 63 percent agree that NYU’s decision is “a good solution,” while 17 percent do not. The remaining 20 percent are not sure. Here’s what some of them had to say about it:
Still, however, there were some skeptical admissions officers, with several calling it “unrealistic” for other less prestigious or smaller schools to mimic. Others lamented that free tuition may make students take the program less seriously.
While there was strong support for free tuition overall, 68 percent say they have no plans to adopt a similar tuition-free policy over the next five to 10 years; 4 percent say they do plan to adopt one; and the remaining 28 percent are not sure. The good news for pre-med and medical school students is that 67 percent of medical schools report increasing their level of financial aid over the past three years. And although few had plans to go tuition-free, they did offer some other ideas of how medical schools can help alleviate student debt:
“The good news is that NYU’s decision to go tuition-free kickstarts an important conversation we need to have about the cost of medical education. Though most schools say they have no plans to implement their own similar program, the fact that so many support NYU’s decision at least shows that they recognize it’s a problem and seem willing to do something about it incrementally and in smaller, but significant ways, like upping financial aid amounts,” says Petros Minasi, director of pre-medical programs, Kaplan Test Prep. “We strongly advise pre-meds to think about how they are going to pay for medical school as far in advance as possible. Apply for scholarships early, for example. FAFSA, which undergrads are familiar with, also applies to medical schools, so the process will be familiar. The more money you have before you apply to medical school, the less limited you will be in your options, if cost is prohibitive.”
In 2017, Kaplan Test Prep awarded nearly $3 million in tuition assistance and scholarships to thousands of MCAT students. To apply, students can visit www.kaptest.com/tuitionassistance.
*The survey was conducted by phone between August and September 2018 of admissions officers at 70 accredited medical schools in the United States and Canada.

Kaplan Nursing has launched a new interactive virtual simulation program for nursing schools to help educate their students make clinical judgments.
New York, NY (October 17, 2018) — Kaplan Nursing, which partners with nursing schools nationwide to prepare thousands of aspiring nurses to pass the NCLEX-RN® and NCLEX-PN® licensing exams and be ready for their career, has launched a new interactive virtual simulation program for nursing schools to help educate their students make clinical judgments. Acquired earlier this year by Kaplan, i-Human Patients is a high performance, healthcare case authoring and playback system which can simulate a complete patient encounter, from performing a nursing assessment, to recognizing, analyzing, and prioritizing data, to evaluating patient outcomes.
The new Kaplan Nursing virtual simulation program offers several benefits: it allows students to practice the complete nursing process in a “safe space” before they see live patients; it provides expert feedback and clinical judgment guidance, regardless of the time of day or faculty staffing considerations; it offers assessment analytics with objective user data by student or cohort; and it can be used to complement or partially substitute for existing clinical instruction.
The National League for Nursing, a leading organization for nurse faculty and leaders in nursing education, has endorsed a National Council of State Boards of Nursing study which concluded that simulation can be substituted for up to 50 percent of traditional clinical experiences.
“Simulation in healthcare has emerged as an important tool for education, assessment and medical error reduction, and we see it playing a critical and exponentially growing role in the future of high-quality, cost-effective care, including in nursing,” said Steven Marietti, president of Kaplan Test Prep’s Licensure group. “This new suite of programs for nursing schools will go a long way in making sure their students are ready for the workforce because the real-life experiences they’ll encounter in the doctor’s office or ER will be similar to the simulations they learned from in the classroom.”
Both nursing schools and nursing students can rely on IHP for free support throughout their subscription, with product training, free consultations, student orientation, and “ask the professor” live sessions.
IHP is a key part of Kaplan’s Licensure operation, expanding current offerings in preparation for professional licensure exams, specifically for its healthcare portfolio, which serves doctors, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics.
