New York, NY (October 31, 2018) — Amid reports of possible low turnout among young voters, a new Kaplan Test Prep survey indicates that at least one segment of younger voters says it plans to participate at the ballot box: college-educated students who are planning to become future professionals. A new survey of nearly 400 18-29 year olds who are preparing for  graduate-level admissions or professional licensure exams shows that 93% of those who are registered to vote say they plan to do so in the midterm elections on November 6*. In contrast to a recent poll by the Institute of Politics (IOP) at Harvard Kennedy School that showed just 40 percent of young Americans 18-29 across the general U.S. population plan to vote in the midterms, Kaplan’s survey represented students preparing to be lawyers, doctors, nurses, business people, engineers, educators, psychologists and others — America’s future professional ranks.

Those surveyed mentioned immigration, healthcare, climate change, women’s rights and civil rights as the issues that are most motivating them to vote next month. As one respondent shared, “My education would be worthless if I did not take the opportunity to vote.” Another shared, “I believe if you don’t vote then you do not have the right to complain about the government.”

When asked what they feel are effective ways to make their voices heard, this group of young voters largely think that traditional activities like voting and getting out the vote are the best ways to channel their energies, rather than posting on social media.

  • Voting: 92%
  • Mobilizing others to vote: 55%
  • Contacting members of Congress: 39%
  • Running for public office: 35%
  • Working for campaigns/candidates: 35%
  • Organizing or participating in public demonstrations: 34%
  • Working in grassroots organizations: 33%
  • Signing petitions: 26%
  • Posting on social media: 26%
  • Contacting the media: 11%

“These survey results show a high level of interest in this year’s election among America’s future professionals, which is notable given that younger Americans generally vote at a much lower rate than their parents and grandparents.  It also offers insight into what their values are and what is motivating them to turn out,” said Yariv Alpher, executive director of research, Kaplan Test Prep. “Election Day is only a few days away and we’re looking forward to seeing how these particular voters make their voices heard.”

Kaplan Test Prep Comments on the 2018 SAT® Scores Report

New York, NY (October 25, 2018) — The following statement about the annual SAT scores report released by the College Board showing an 8-point median score increase from 1060 in 2017 to 1068 this year comes from Monica Noll, manager of teacher training, Kaplan Test Prep. Noll has worked at Kaplan for nearly 10 years and has helped thousands of aspiring college students in her current role and as a teacher:

“We think there are a few key factors that explain the median SAT score increase. First, the Class of 2017 was the first class to go through the new SAT and understandably had fewer new resources available, less time with the new content, and were making big decisions on when to test. Members of the Class of 2018 had more time and more resources available to prepare. There was an increased level of comfort because of this. Second, unlike members of the Class of 2017, who could either choose to take the old SAT or new SAT, members of the Class of 2018 had no such choice — they could only take the new SAT. This allowed them to singularly focus. Additionally, schools and counselors have become much more knowledgeable about the exam and are better equipped to help their students and answer parents’ questions.

“We think it’s encouraging that SAT scores are on the rise and the increase in test takers implies that more students than ever are considering college, which is important. But we need to be careful about drawing any big conclusions about a possible trend. Keep in mind that this is only the second SAT scores report that includes results from students who only took the new SAT, which was revamped in March 2016. We really need another year or two of data to glean concrete trends.”

Kaplan Test Prep Survey: A Majority of Medical Schools Think NYU’s Free Tuition Policy is the Way to Go, but Few Plan to Adopt Similar Policies, Though They’ve Increased Financial Aid Levels

New York, NY (October 23, 2018) — $192,000. It’s a figure engrained in the minds of many aspiring doctors. That’s the median debt for graduating medical students, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges. But will free tuition lower that number? The New York University School of Medicine’s recent decision to go tuition-free for all students, regardless of their income, has the widespread support of medical schools across the continent as a good solution to alleviate debt burden, according to Kaplan Test Prep’s 2018 survey of medical school admissions officers, though only a handful have plans to adopt a similar policy*.

Among the 70 medical schools surveyed, 63 percent agree that NYU’s decision is “a good solution,” while 17 percent do not. The remaining 20 percent are not sure. Here’s what some of them had to say about it:

  • “It’s fantastic. Debt is an enormous driver of students’ choices, so if money wasn’t an issue they could make the decisions they want to.”
  • “The cost of education is increasing so much, especially for doctors, and there’s a shortage of physicians in underserved communities especially, and the cost of tuition can be a barrier.”
  • “I feel if a student is qualified, helping them to progress without the stress of debt might help them perform better in the program.”

Still, however, there were some skeptical admissions officers, with several calling it “unrealistic” for other less prestigious or smaller schools to mimic. Others lamented that free tuition may make students take the program less seriously.

While there was strong support for free tuition overall, 68 percent say they have no plans to adopt a similar tuition-free policy over the next five to 10 years; 4 percent say they do plan to adopt one; and the remaining 28 percent are not sure. The good news for pre-med and medical school students is that 67 percent of medical schools report increasing their level of financial aid over the past three years. And although few had plans to go tuition-free, they did offer some other ideas of how medical schools can help alleviate student debt:

  • “Going to a three year model may help, but maybe not for all students.”
  • “Talking to students about managing debt will be helpful for them, only using what they need to use, being smart.”
  • “I think there needs to be more alumni engagement, scholarships through that facet. Like an undergraduate model, where people are giving back.”

“The good news is that NYU’s decision to go tuition-free kickstarts an important conversation we need to have about the cost of medical education. Though most schools say they have no plans to implement their own similar program, the fact that so many support NYU’s decision at least shows that they recognize it’s a problem and seem willing to do something about it incrementally and in smaller, but significant ways, like upping financial aid amounts,” says Petros Minasi, director of pre-medical programs, Kaplan Test Prep. “We strongly advise pre-meds to think about how they are going to pay for medical school as far in advance as possible. Apply for scholarships early, for example. FAFSA, which undergrads are familiar with, also applies to medical schools, so the process will be familiar. The more money you have before you apply to medical school, the less limited you will be in your options, if cost is prohibitive.”

In 2017, Kaplan Test Prep awarded nearly $3 million in tuition assistance and scholarships to thousands of MCAT students. To apply, students can visit www.kaptest.com/tuitionassistance.

*The survey was conducted by phone between August and September 2018 of admissions officers at 70 accredited medical schools in the United States and Canada.

Kaplan Nursing has launched a new interactive virtual simulation program for nursing schools to help educate their students make clinical judgments.

Kaplan Nursing has launched a new interactive virtual simulation program for nursing schools to help educate their students make clinical judgments.

New York, NY (October 17, 2018) — Kaplan Nursing, which partners with nursing schools nationwide to prepare thousands of aspiring nurses to pass the NCLEX-RN® and NCLEX-PN® licensing exams and be ready for their career, has launched a new interactive virtual simulation program for nursing schools to help educate their students make clinical judgments. Acquired earlier this year by Kaplan, i-Human Patients is a high performance, healthcare case authoring and playback system which can simulate a complete patient encounter, from performing a nursing assessment, to recognizing, analyzing, and prioritizing data, to evaluating patient outcomes.

The new Kaplan Nursing virtual simulation program offers several benefits: it allows students to practice the complete nursing process in a “safe space” before they see live patients; it provides expert feedback and clinical judgment guidance, regardless of the time of day or faculty staffing considerations; it offers assessment analytics with objective user data by student or cohort; and it can be used to complement or partially substitute for existing clinical instruction.

The National League for Nursing, a leading organization for nurse faculty and leaders in nursing education, has endorsed a National Council of State Boards of Nursing study which concluded that simulation can be substituted for up to 50 percent of traditional clinical experiences.

“Simulation in healthcare has emerged as an important tool for education, assessment and medical error reduction, and we see it playing a critical and exponentially growing role in the future of high-quality, cost-effective care, including in nursing,” said Steven Marietti, president of Kaplan Test Prep’s Licensure group. “This new suite of programs for nursing schools will go a long way in making sure their students are ready for the workforce because the real-life experiences they’ll encounter in the doctor’s office or ER will be similar to the simulations they learned from in the classroom.”

Both nursing schools and nursing students can rely on IHP for free support throughout their subscription, with product training, free consultations, student orientation, and “ask the professor” live sessions.

IHP is a key part of Kaplan’s Licensure operation, expanding current offerings in preparation for professional licensure exams, specifically for its healthcare portfolio, which serves doctors, nurses, physician assistants, pharmacists, emergency medical technicians (EMTs) and paramedics.

Kaplan Test Prep Comments on Announcement that the LSAT® Will Switch from Paper-and-Pencil to Digital Format in July 2019

The LSAT is switching to a digital format next summer. Find out how this may affect you in the law school admissions process.

New York, NY (October 3, 2018) — The Law School Admission Council made two announcements today, with the stated goal of modernizing law school admissions and easing the process of applying to law school for students taking the LSAT next summer and beyond. First, LSAC announced the transition to a digital tablet-based testing format from its current paper-and-pencil format, beginning in July 2019. The exam’s content and length will remain the same.

LSAC also announced an expansion from six to nine testing dates for the 2019-2020 testing year, giving more options for students to test when they are ready.

The following statement about what this means for pre-law students in the short-term comes from Jeff Thomas, executive director of pre-law programs, Kaplan Test Prep:

“Transitioning the LSAT from a paper-and-pencil format to a digital format will be one of the biggest changes to hit the exam in its 70-year history. Because there is always some uncertainty with a test change of this magnitude, our advice is to make every reasonable effort to test by June 2019, but no later than July 2019. Here’s why: June 2019 will be the last administration of the LSAT in which all students can take the exam in its current paper-and-pencil format, the format they know and have many existing practice tools; in July, the test maker will assign some test takers pencil-and-paper tests, while some will be assigned digital tests. The choice will not belong to the student. However, uniquely, and just in July, test-takers will have a one-time opportunity to cancel their scores. Come September 2019 though, every test taker will take the exam in its new digital format, on a tablet, with no option to cancel after receiving a score. While change is not always easy, digital testing should allow for a more consistent test-taking experience for students, and should allow scores to be in students’ hands faster, which are both positive developments.

“Kaplan Test Prep will of course provide ample digital LSAT preparation tools and practice opportunities for those who do end up sitting for a digital LSAT administration.

“More broadly, the LSAT’s move to a digital format follows the trend that we have seen among all major graduate-level admissions exams over the past decade. The admissions exams for graduate school, business school and medical school have all already made the switch from paper-and-pencil. The ACT® college admissions exam has also begun piloting the test to some students in a digital format, making the SAT® the last major exam in paper-and-pencil format, for now. While students have been quick to embrace everything digital in their personal lives, now they will have no choice but to adapt to it on their educational tracks too if they plan to earn a graduate-level degree, which may take some getting used to.”

Kaplan Test Prep Survey: Record Percentages of Admissions Officers at Law Schools and Business Schools Visiting Applicants’ Social Media Profiles — and They Often Don’t Like What They Find

The percentages of admissions officers at America’s law schools and business schools who say they have looked at applicants’ social media pages to learn more about them has hit record highs

The percentages of admissions officers at America’s law schools and business schools who say they have looked at applicants’ social media pages to learn more about them has hit record highs.

New York, NY (October 3, 2018) — The percentages of admissions officers at America’s law schools* and business schools** who say they have looked at applicants’ social media pages like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn to learn more about them has hit record highs, at 56 percent and 40 percent, respectively, according to new Kaplan Test Prep research. This compares to Kaplan’s surveys from 2011 — the first year the company began asking this question — when just 37 percent of law school admissions officers and 22 percent of business school admissions officers examined social media posts.

Notably, the actual occurrence of applicant social media profile checks is significantly lower than the belief that its use is acceptable practice in admissions. Kaplan’s surveys found that 91 percent of law school admissions officers and 71 percent of business school admissions officers say visiting applicants’ social media profiles is “fair game,” as opposed to “an invasion or privacy and shouldn’t be done.”

Kaplan’s surveys also find that among admissions officers who do visit applicants’ social media pages, the prevalence of finding something that hurt their chances of getting in is much higher among law schools than business schools, at 66 percent and 36 percent, respectively. Law school admissions officers most cited things like “inappropriate photos” where applicants were drinking underage or engaged in “unsavory activities.” Other mentioned applicants who posted something racist or posting about undisclosed criminal activity. Business school admissions officers most cited applicants who misrepresented their professional experience.

On the flip side, 29 percent of law school admissions say that what they found has helped applicants’ admissions chances, compared to a much larger 46 percent for business school admissions officers. Both groups cited discovering community service activities unmentioned in the traditional application as aiding applicants’ admissions chances.

“An overarching theme to the entire law school application is whether a prospective student is able to exercise good judgment; an applicant’s digital trail can be an indicator of whether or not he or she possesses this quality,” said Jeff Thomas, executive director of pre-law programs, Kaplan Test Prep. “The legal community takes ethics among its members seriously. You not only have to pass a state bar’s Character and Fitness test to be admitted, but even afterward, unethical behavior can lead to your disbarment, stripping you of your ability to practice.  Not many other professions have that kind of enforceable code of conduct, so it’s natural that law schools do scrupulous research into their applicants.”

Noah Teitelbaum, Kaplan Test Prep’s executive director of pre-business programs, added, “While what you post on social media is not nearly as important as the traditional factors in admissions process like your standardized test scores and GPA, always be mindful of what you post. Your social media footprint can potentially give you an admissions boost, but in some cases it can and will be used against you. Share wisely.”

*Based on the results of a Kaplan Test Prep survey conducted by phone in August 2018-September 2018 of 117 law schools, including 28 of the top 50, as ranked by U.S. News & World Report.

**Based on the results of a Kaplan Test Prep survey conducted by phone in August 2018-September 2018 of 162 business schools, including 34 of the top 100, as ranked by U.S. News & World Report.

Polstein asserted that Kaplan has no plans to integrate the brands, noting, “Kaplan and Barron’s have both been successful taking different approaches to instruction and learning, as they appeal to different types of learners. We plan to continue with that approach.”

“I couldn’t be more pleased to pass the torch on to a company that shares the same roots and values as Barron’s,” said Manuel Barron, founder and CEO of Barron’s Educational Series. “Kaplan has also been a strong innovator in delivering educational programs and products, and I’m thrilled that Kaplan will be powering the future of the Barron’s brand to new generations of students.”

Kaplan Bar Review Survey: Newly Minted Lawyers Reflect More Progressive Thinking, But Hold Traditional Views on Selection Process for Supreme Court Justices

A new Kaplan Bar Review survey finds that a plurality of newly minted lawyers want the next SCOTUS justice to be like Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

New York, NY (September 6, 2018) — A new Kaplan Bar Review survey of more than 600 newly minted lawyers shows a dichotomy between political perspective and institutional rationale: while they lean politically progressive, they also believe in the traditional process of how U.S. Supreme Court justices are chosen and in the position’s lifetime tenure.

    • Rule like RBG: When asked which member of the Supreme Court the next justice should emulate, respondents overwhelmingly favored Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who topped the list with 41 percent, followed by Sonia Sotomayor at 19 percent. The recently retired Anthony Kennedy was the choice of 11 percent of respondents. While none of the other current justices secured more than 10 percent of responses, the justices viewed as the liberal bloc (Ginsburg, Sotomayor, Stephen Breyer and Elena Kagan) combined are the choice of 67 percent, while those considered to be part of the conservative bloc (Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, John Roberts, and Clarence Thomas) are the combined choice of 22 percent. (Kennedy, long a swing vote on the Court, was not included in this categorization.)
    • Lifetime Tenure: Although many of those surveyed may be concerned that the Court is set to tilt to the right for a generation with the likely confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh, 65 percent of those surveyed still support a lifetime appointment for SCOTUS justices. According to one analysis, the average tenure of Supreme Court justices over the next century will be about 35 years, compared to just 18 years for the past 100 years.
    • By Appointment Only: These recent law school graduates also oppose changes to how Supreme Court justices make it to the bench, with only 24 percent supporting the idea of electing justices rather than Presidents nominating them for confirmation.
    • Beyond the Harvard and Yale Club: Despite their traditionalist views in some areas, these new attorneys want radical change in another. Every sitting Supreme Court justice attended either Yale or Harvard law school (Ginsburg started at Harvard, but ultimately graduated from Columbia), and today’s law school graduates want to widen the doors of opportunity, with only 22 percent saying justices should have graduated from a T-14 school, which is defined as being a school that has at some point been ranked in the top 14 of the U.S. News & World Report Law School rankings.

“Who sits on the Supreme Court is one of today’s most divisive issues, but Ruth Bader Ginsburg is one of those rare personalities in the U.S. who seems to transcend ideology, as for many, she’s not only a brilliant legal mind, but also a pop culture icon. This could explain her popularity among the new generation of lawyers,” says Tammi Rice, vice president, Kaplan Bar Review. “It’s also clear from our survey that today’s new lawyers are telling us that there is a lot of potential Supreme Court talent beyond just Cambridge and New Haven.”

*Kaplan Bar Review conducted the survey via email in July 2018. It includes responses from 612 law school graduates from the class of 2018 who took a Kaplan bar review course.

New York, NY (August 15, 2018) — Test prep and teacher office hours enter the subscription economy as Kaplan Test Prep, a premier provider of educational and career services, and Cengage, an education and technology company, have announced a partnership that will provide free test prep and live academic support offerings for Cengage Unlimited subscribers.

As part of the venture, Kaplan will provide specially designed free test preparation offerings for the GRE®, GMAT®, LSAT®, MCAT®, DAT® and Praxis® to subscribers of Cengage Unlimited, Cengage’s all-in-one digital subscription for unlimited access to course materials. Cengage Unlimited subscribers will also have free access to Kaplan’s HelpSuite of live online academic support for Physics, Chemistry and Organic Chemistry, which provides live help from expert teachers through online office hours, live chat and email, as well as on-demand videos and quizzes. Subscribers will receive 30 days of free access per semester to both the test prep offerings and the live academic support programs from Kaplan.

Judah Karkowsky, Senior Vice President, Corporate and Business Development for Cengage, noted affordability of academic services is top of mind for college students, as highlighted in a recently released Cengage survey conducted by Morning Consult. “Buying course materials is college students’ biggest source of financial stress after tuition, which makes this partnership especially timely as they head back to school this month,” said Karkowsky. “Cengage Unlimited gives us the ideal platform to serve students over their entire college career with resources and tools they need to take the next leap in life — whether that is with quality Cengage materials or Kaplan’s best-in-class prep products and services. Together, we’re providing that added value for free to students for 30 days as part of their subscription.”

Furthermore, this partnership comes as subscriptions become an increasingly common way to access products and services online. A recent survey by McKinsey & Company reports that the subscription e-commerce market has grown by more than 100 percent each of the past five years.

“Kaplan and Cengage share the mission of making educational advancement a reality for as many students as possible and making it accessible to them in the ways they want, whether it’s a month-to-month subscription or a one-time purchase,” said Lee Weiss, Vice President, Kaplan Test Prep. “Whichever way they choose, access to our graduate-level prep and academic support tools will provide college students with a great way to get exposure to options as they seek to differentiate themselves in a competitive world.”

As part of the partnership, Kaplan also becomes Cengage’s exclusive test prep provider.
