  • About the Bar Exam

    The Virginia Bar Exam is a two-day exam. It takes place on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of February and July. The Virginia Essays and Multiple Choice Day takes place on Tuesday and the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE®) takes place on Wednesday.

  • Bar Exam Format

    The Virginia Bar Exam is a two-day exam.

    • Day 1: AM: 5 essay questions PM: 4 essay questions and 10 multiple choice questions
    • Day 2: 200-question, multiple-choice Multistate Bar Exam (MBE®).
  • Subjects Tested

    The seven MBE® subjects (and VA distinctions) are tested as well as: Agency, Business Organizations, Conflict of Laws, Creditor's Rights, Domestic Relations, Equity, Local Government Law, Personal Property, Professional Responsibility, Sales, Taxation, Trusts, Uniform Commercial Code, Virginia Civil and Criminal Procedure, and Wills and Estate Administration

  • Bar Exam Dates

    • February 25-26, 2020
    • July 28-29, 2020
  • Grading

    The Virginia Bar Exam will require a minimum total scaled combined score of 140 to pass.

    The MBE® is weighted at 40% of the score, the Essays are weighted at 54% and the short answer/multiple choice are weighted at 6%.

  • MPRE®

    A minimum passing scaled score is 85 or higher.

  • Other Requirements

    As of September 1, 2019, applicants will have three options when applying for the bar exam:

    Option 1 - Applicants will take both the Virginia Essay exam and the Multistate Bar Examination (MBE®) in Virginia at the same bar exam administration.

    Option 2 - Applicants will take the Virginia Essay exam and will use/transfer an MBE® scaled score of 133 or greater, taken within 3 years prior to the date of the exam applied for, from a previous bar exam taken in Virginia or a jurisdiction other than Virginia.

    Option 3 - Licensed attorneys will take only the Virginia Essay exam. They must be actively licensed to practice law and be in good standing in a jurisdiction other than Virginia, and they must have taken and passed a bar exam in a jurisdiction other than Virginia.
