About the Bar Exam
Massachusetts has adopted the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE®). It is a two-day exam, and takes place on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of February and July. The Multistate Essay Exam (MEE®) and the Multistate Performance Tests (MPT®s) are administered on Tuesday; the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE®) is administered on Wednesday.

Bar Exam Format
The Massachusetts Bar Exam is a two-day exam.
- Day 1: AM: Two Multistate Performance Tests (MPT®s) PM: Six Multistate Essay Exam (MEE®) essays.
- Day 2: 200-question, multiple-choice Multistate Bar Exam (MBE®).
Subjects Tested
Business Associations (Agency and Partnership; Corporations and Limited Liability Companies), Civil Procedure, Conflict of Laws, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Family Law, Real Property, Torts, Trusts and Estates (Decedents' Estates; Trusts and Future Interests), and Uniform Commercial Code (Secured Transactions).
Bar Exam Dates
The Massachusetts Bar Exam will be administered on:
- 2024: July 30-31,
- 2025: February 25-26, and July 29-30
Grading
The Massachusetts Bar Exam requires a minimum scaled combined score of 270 points out of 400 points to pass. The MBE® is weighted at 50% of the score, the Essays are weighted at 30%, and the MPT®s are weighted at 20%.
MPRE®
The minimum passing scaled score is 85 or higher.
Reciprocity
Massachusetts permits admission on motion, without examination, for applicants who have practiced for five of the last seven years, are admitted to practice in another jurisdiction, have met the education requirements and passed the MPRE® with a score of 85 or higher.
Applicants who have obtained at least a 270 on the UBE® in another jurisdiction may apply for admission. An applicant has three years from the date of the exam to transfer the UBE® score to Massachusetts.
Other Requirements
Beginning with the July 2018 UBE® administration, an applicant for admission in Massachusetts must also take the Massachusetts Law Component (MLC). The MLC is an online fifty-question multiple choice exam on key distinctions of Massachusetts law and procedure. The exam questions are based on substantive outlines provided to the applicant, including: Access to Justice, Anti-Discrimination Law, Business Organizations, Civil Procedure, Consumer Protections ,Criminal Law and Procedure, Domestic Relations, Estates and Wills, and Evidence.
