About the Bar Exam
New Jersey has adopted the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE®). It is a two-day exam, and takes place on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of February and July. The Multistate Essay Exam (MEE®) and the Multistate Performance Tests (MPT®s) are administered on Tuesday; the Multistate Bar Exam (MBE®) is administered on Wednesday.

Bar Exam Format
The New Jersey Bar Exam is a two-day exam.
- Day 1: AM: Two Multistate Performance Tests (MPT®s) PM: Six Multistate Essay Exam (MEE®) essays.
- Day 2: 200-question, multiple-choice Multistate Bar Exam (MBE®).
Subjects Tested
Business Associations (Agency and Partnership; Corporations and Limited Liability Companies), Civil Procedure, Conflict of Laws, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Family Law, Real Property, Torts, Trusts and Estates (Decedents' Estates; Trusts and Future Interests), and Uniform Commercial Code (Secured Transactions).
Bar Exam Dates
The New Jersey Bar Exam will be administered on:
- 2024: July 30-31,
- 2025: February 25-26, and July 29-30
Grading
The New Jersey Bar Exam requires a minimum scaled combined score of 266 points out of 400 points to pass. The MBE® is weighted at 50% of the score, the Essays are weighted at 30%, and the MPT®s are weighted at 20%.
MPRE®
Scaled scores of 75 or higher meet the requirements for the MPRE®.
Note: if you have taken a Professional Responsibility Ethics Class in law school, and have passed with a grade of a “C-” or better, you do not have to take the MPRE®.
Reciprocity
New Jersey adopted Admission by Motion for out-of-state attorneys from states with which New Jersey has reciprocity. For the list of states, please refer to "Application Forms" under "Admission by Motion" on the website here.
Applicants who have obtained at least a 266 on the UBE® in another jurisdiction may apply for admission. An applicant has three years from the date of the exam to transfer the UBE® score to New Jersey.
