VERMONT BAR EXAM INFORMATION

Vermont has adopted the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE®). It is a two-day exam, which takes place on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of February and July. The Multistate Essay Exam (MEE®) and the Multistate Performance Tests (MPT®) are administered on Tuesday; the Mulitstate Bar Exam (MBE®) is administered on Wednesday.

The Vermont Bar Exam is a two-day exam.

  • Day 1: AM: Two Multistate Performance Tests (MPT®s) PM: Six Multistate Essay Exam (MEE®) essays.
  • Day 2: 200-question, multiple-choice Multistate Bar Exam (MBE®).

Business Associations (Agency and Partnership; Corporations and Limited Liability Companies), Civil Procedure, Conflict of Laws, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Family Law, Real Property, Torts, Trusts and Estates (Decedents' Estates; Trusts and Future Interests), and Uniform Commercial Code (Secured Transactions).

  • 2024: July 30-31,
  • 2025: February 25-26, and July 29-30

The Vermont Bar Exam requires a minimum scaled combined score of 270 points out of 400 points to pass. The MBE® is weighted at 50% of the score, the Essays are weighted at 30%, and the MPT®s are weighted at 20%.

A minimum passing scaled score is 80 or higher.

Admission by Transferred UBE® Score: Applicants who have obtained at least a 270 on the UBE® in another jurisdiction may apply for admission. The passing score must have been achieved no later than five years after graduating from law school or completing the Law Office Study Program. An applicant has three years from the date of the exam to transfer the UBE® score to Vermont or if the applicant has been actively engaged in the practice of law for at least two years in another US Jurisdiction in which they are a member in good standing, applicant has five years from the date of the exam to transfer the UBE® score to Vermont.

Admission without Examination: An attorney presently licensed in another U.S. jurisdiction, may apply for admission to the Vermont bar without examination if the following are satisfied:

  1. Be currently licensed in another U.S. jurisdiction, in good standing, and not be suspended or disbarred;
  2. Have been actively engaged in the practice of law for no less than five of the 10 years immediately preceding the filing of the application (or, if you have been admitted in New Hampshire and Maine, been actively engaged in the practice of law for no less than three years immediately preceding the filing of the application); and
  3. Not have failed the Vermont Bar Exam or scored lower than 270 on the UBE® within the five years immediately preceding the filing of the application.
