The exam contains patient-centered scenarios with a series of questions and topics presented randomly. Like the USMLE Step 1, it’s multiple choice, but you’ll be asked to move from topic to topic seamlessly. Step 2 CK includes test items in the following content areas: internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, preventive medicine, psychiatry, surgery, and other areas related to providing care under supervision.

According to the USMLE, most medical students take Step 2 CK in their fourth year. Some students feel the best time to tackle the Step 2 CK is when clinical science knowledge from their rotations is still fresh in their minds. International medical graduates are recommended to prepare 4-6 months for the Step 2 CK. The test is administered by appointment on a year-round basis.

The Step 2 CK is divided into eight 60-minute blocks, and test item formats may vary within each block.

Step 2 CK is a one-day, multiple-choice, computer-based examination lasting about 9 hours.

The Step 2 CK includes about 318 questions, broken down into 8 one-hour blocks of 40 questions each.
