White Paper: COMLEX-USA® Level 1 Product Efficacy Longitudinal Study

by Jonathan Bruner, D.O., Executive Director of Institutional Medical Programs | April 24, 2025

We recently partnered with Kaplan’s Learning Analytics & Psychometrics Team to examine the relationship between student performance and engagement with Kaplan's COMLEX-USA Level 1 products and their official COMLEX-USA Level 1 exam outcomes. Data was collected from a cohort of 134 students from a U.S. osteopathic medical school. Ultimately, the study determined that the students who passed the official exam had higher average scores and greater completion of Kaplan products than those who did not pass. Download the white paper below to learn more about the study and its results.

The white paper offers detailed information and analysis around:

  • The relationship between student performance and engagement with Kaplan's COMLEX-USA Level 1 products and their official COMLEX-USA Level 1 exam outcomes.
  • The effectiveness of Kaplan's DO: Preclinical Review + Assess products in helping students pass the COMLEX-USA Level 1 exam.
  • A comparison of performance and use of Kaplan's products between students who passed and those who did not pass the official exam.

“The analysis results showed that students who passed the official COMLEX-USA® Level 1 exam had an average higher score and more completion of their Kaplan products than those who did not pass.”

I was born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan, and I am a third-generation osteopathic physician. My career path has been most influenced by an interest in both science and education. I graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor of science degree, major in biology and minor in chemistry, from the School of Education. Becoming a physician was the natural intersection of my interests, so I went on to graduate from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine before completing my residency in Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (ONMM) there as well. I practiced and worked as an associate professor for 18 years and also worked as a residency director for two ONMM programs before joining Kaplan.
