White Paper: COMLEX-USA® Level 1 Product Pass Rate Longitudinal Study

by Jonathan Bruner, D.O., Executive Director of Institutional Medical Programs | April 25, 2025

In 2024, Kaplan Medical partnered with an osteopathic medical school to determine the efficacy of Kaplan DO products. Kaplan DO: Preclinical Review + Assess materials were given to students in the class of 2026 to aid them in preparation for the official COMLEX-USA Level 1 exam. The students and school used these materials, then the COMLEX-USA Level 1 exam scores of the students who had access to the Kaplan DO materials were compared to the scores of the previous class who did not. The study concluded that providing Kaplan DO materials to students led to a significant increase in COMLEX-USA Level 1 exam pass rates. Download the white paper below to learn more about the study and its results.

The white paper offers detailed information and analysis around:

  • The efficacy of Kaplan DO products, including how well Kaplan DO: Preclinical Review + Assess materials, including the Foundational Video Library, video quizzes, Qbank, OMM ReKap sections, and the Level 1 Secure Simulated Exam, prepare students for the COMLEX-USA Level 1 exam.
  • The impact of Kaplan product engagement by examining how the level of student engagement with Kaplan products (such as completing pre-assessments, the simulated exam, and quizzes) affects their COMLEX-USA Level 1 pass rates.

“An osteopathic medical school that provided our Kaplan DO materials to their students showed a 17 percentage point increase in their COMLEX-USA Level 1 exam pass rate compared to the previous class.”

I was born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan, and I am a third-generation osteopathic physician. My career path has been most influenced by an interest in both science and education. I graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor of science degree, major in biology and minor in chemistry, from the School of Education. Becoming a physician was the natural intersection of my interests, so I went on to graduate from the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine before completing my residency in Osteopathic Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (ONMM) there as well. I practiced and worked as an associate professor for 18 years and also worked as a residency director for two ONMM programs before joining Kaplan.
